In 2022, Clouds + Ladders designer Kate took on a complex collaboration that led her to learn how to have her metal frames cast in bronze in a foundry instead of hand-shaping and soldering them out of brass. Having learned to solder by watching how-to videos on YouTube (for plumbing, no less!), the soldering step in the creation process has always been the most difficult and time-consuming, as well as holding her back from creating the complex designs she has dreamed of making. With the new casting technique, she is able to create more intricate and detailed designs.
One of her dreams for C+L is to create jewelry in collaboration with other artists who work in various media and styles. By doing this, Kate is able to expand her visual language, include imagery she might not have considered before, and share some of her favorite artists and designers with you! Each collaborative piece will be made in limited editions of around 20.
Ayca Kilicoglu, designer of the brand Mur by Ayca, is an SF-based graphic designer who creates whimsical and colorful animal print accessories. Ayca and Kate share a mutual admiration for modern and crisp aesthetics, and they chose Ayca's fox scarf for their collaboration so the resulting earrings could have the fun movement of the body swinging gently from the hinged tail. That tiny hinge is a feat of creation!
Each earring measures 3/4" wide x 3" long and weighs about the same as 2 house keys.
Posts are nickel free/hypoallergenic/surgical steel, and each earring has a drop of resin on the back so no metal will touch your ears.
